Historian, Author, Consultant

I am a historian and writer who works with authors, institutions, and professional organizations engaging the history of war, military institutions, and national security. My work focuses on interpretation, narrative clarity, and professional education—helping people make sense of complex historical subjects and communicate them responsibly and effectively.
I offer writing and editorial consulting, historical advisory work, and professionally facilitated staff rides. Each service stands on its own, but all are grounded in the same approach: serious history, clear thinking, and careful attention to why the past still matters..
My practice is organized around three complementary areas. Each can stand alone, but together they reflect a single approach: historically grounded thinking, careful interpretation, and clear communication.
Writing & Editorial Consulting
I work with historians, journalists, and nonfiction authors developing book-length projects or substantial public writing. My focus is structural, conceptual, and narrative guidance, not copyediting.
This work is best suited to authors navigating:
- Book proposals and manuscript revisions
- The transition from academic to public-facing writing
- Complex historical or institutional arguments

How I Work
Across all engagements, I emphasize:
- Clear scope and defined outcomes
- Intellectual rigor without jargon
- Limited capacity to preserve depth and quality
I do not offer high-volume services or rapid-turnaround work. Each engagement is shaped deliberately, with attention to both substance and sustainability.
About the Practice
This work supports my own scholarship and writing on war, institutions, and memory. Consulting and teaching in the field sharpen my thinking and ensure that my writing remains grounded in both historical evidence and lived questions of meaning, power, and consequence.
Clients benefit from that same integration of research, narrative, and interpretation.
Working Together
If you are developing a serious writing project, educational program, or historical initiative and want thoughtful, disciplined engagement, I welcome inquiries.
Each engagement begins with a short conversation to clarify fit, scope, and expectations.
More about me:
I am a historian, writer, and educator focused on war, military institutions, and the ways societies explain, justify, and remember conflict. My work moves between scholarship and public writing, with an emphasis on narrative clarity and institutional context.
I have spent years researching and writing about the modern U.S. military, Cold War strategy, and the long afterlives of war—work that has included archival research, field study, and engagement with both academic and professional audiences. Alongside my own writing, I work with authors and organizations who are trying to make complex historical material both accurate and intelligible.
Teaching and consulting—whether in manuscripts, seminars, or on historical terrain—sharpen my thinking as a writer. Writing, in turn, informs how I guide others through historical problems. I see these as parts of a single practice rather than separate pursuits.
Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, I developed a profound interest in history and the military early in life. Following a distinguished career in several airborne units, where I earned the Master Parachutist Wings and the Pathfinder Badge, I decided to embark on doctoral studies in history. My research centers on unraveling the origins of the airborne culture that has been a significant part of his personal and professional journey.
My book, The Airborne Mafia: The Paratroopers Who Shaped America’s Cold War Army, is out now! Order it on the Cornell University Press website or Amazon. The Airborne Mafia explores how a small group of World War II airborne officers took control of the US Army in after World War II. This powerful cadre cemented a unique airborne culture that had an unprecedented impact on the Cold War US Army and beyond.
In addition, my scholarship has appeared in the Journal of Military History, Military Review, Parameters, On Point: The Journal of Army History, War on the Rocks, the Small Wars Journal, and Modern War Institute.
Here you will find a blog that contains musings on my journey from the army to the life of a professional historian as well as stories from my research. You can also find information about my published work and media appearances here. I have also made available book reviews from studying for comprehensive exams during his doctoral studies. These can be accessed here.
